Here's a nice bit from XFM
X-Posure Showcase: Beecake Who? Billy Boyd - lead vocals, guitar John Crawford - drums, backing vocals, percussion Billy Johnston - lead guitar, backing vocals, keyboard Rick Martin - bass guitar, backing vocals Where? Glasgow When? 2006 Why? To have some fun with some very close friends…anything else was a bonus. History? Initially the band members were in bands together off and on since the late 80s (John, Billy J & Billy B were in Foreign Country & Duck City, Rick was in The Believers) and gigged throughout Glasgow for a few years. All very close friends kept in close touch through the subsequent years hanging out together regularly, meeting up for the odd jam now and then. After a couple of meetings in the summer of 2006 they decided to get together after a night out in the west end of Glasgow. Rehearsals started…a few cover versions and some old original material, later in early 2007 they sold out their first gig as Beecake at Barfly, Glasgow. A MySpace page began very quickly and assisted in showcasing their songs (now currently has over 5200 friends and around 1000 daily plays). To their surprise people attended from as far as Japan and Italy as well as England and of course Scotland. The band started to create some attention, initially through Billy Boyd's profile as a successful actor…to most people's surprise they seemed to cut it live after several gigs some of which were as far a field as L.A. and then in the studio recording tracks, mostly written by Billy Boyd and some later tracks co-written with the full band. Their debut EP 'Just B' seemed to create a good base for some more recording most of which was recorded in Glasgow's own CAVA studios. Some record company interest has happened lately and whatever happens happens. Still unsigned! To release an album and tour would be great… an initial ambition for the whole band would be to play the infamous Glasgow Barrowland. Influences? John - INXS (Jon Farris), Chili Peppers (Chad Smith), The Police Billy Johnston - Yes, Crowded House, Fish, The Beatles Rick - The Who, The Jam, ABC Billy Boyd - The The, John Lennon, Elbow …among others Currently listening to? John - Foo Fighters, Crowded House, Biffy Clyro, Kasabian Rick - The Enemy, Justin Currie, Chilli Peppers Billy Johnston - Gomez, Fish, The Finn Brothers Billy Boyd - Radiohead (In Rainbows), Turin Brakes (Dark On Fire), Ani DiFranco, Flaming Lips Not listening to? ...at the moment 70s disco…but you never know! Future gigs? 14 November - Glasgow Cottiers December 2 - Edinburgh Jam House December 7 - Harris Anchorage December 21 - Glasgow Box January 3 - Glasgow King Tuts February 23 - Edinburgh Cabaret Voltaire Website? www.myspace.com/beecakeband
