Monaghan not coming back to Lost Dominic Monaghan, who played drug-addled rocker Charlie Pace on Lost until he sacrificed himself a season or two ago, has been appearing in a series of promotional ads for ABC - the network that airs the show. This, of course, led to lots of speculation that the character is due to return on the time-tripping show. However, this won't be happening. EW.com's Ausiello Files reports that Monaghan is in the promos because he is set to join the cast of another ABC series for the 2009-10 season - as to which show, well, that is still under wraps for the moment.

Monaghan's presence caused a lot of confusion and speculation, because he's been gone from Lost for quite awhile. Add in him responding with, "I was" in the promo, when asked if he was dead, and many wondered if we were to take from this that Charlie was returning to Lost. As it turned out, EW.com's Michael Ausiello discovered that rather than returning to Lost, the promo instead was referring to Monaghan's role on a new ABC series. Of course ABC has a rather notable ten new scripted series for next season, meaning there were a lot of possibilities as to what show Monaghan would be part of. IGN has now learned what show Monaghan may be on and that it's one we already were quite intrigued by - Flash Forward. Like others (including in our comments), we had thought Flash Forward seemed like a very strong candidate for Monaghan's secret show. Created by Brannon Braga and David Goyer, the high concept series is being positioned by ABC as something of a spiritual follow up to Lost and it's one of two geek-friendly series -- the other being the remake of V -- that would most mesh with the Lost fanbase Monaghan brings with him. Sources in the know regarding Monaghan's situation now tell IGN that indeed seems to be the case, and Monaghan will likely have a major role on Flash Forward. Click above to watch a scene from Flash Forward We contacted ABC about Monaghan for an official response, and a spokesperson told us, "There is a lot of speculation out there right now, but we're not confirming any casting at this point." Based on the novel by Robert J. Sawyer, Flash Forward's cast includes Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love), John Cho (Harold & Kumar / Star Trek), Sonya Walger (Penny on Lost) and Jack Davenport (the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy). The story follows what happens when a global event causes everyone on Earth to black out for 2 minutes and 17 seconds. The populace awakens to discover the many tragedies that occurred as a result of the phenomenon, while also infused with visions of their own future. The 32-year-old English actor, who rose to fame in Lord of the Rings and in the TV show Lost, had originally been cast in Wolverine as a freakish, bird-like mutant called Barnell Bohusk, otherwise known as Beak. In the comic books, the character was even more avian - with a feathered body and rudimentary wings. His mutation was later removed and he went on to wear a hi-tech flight suit and take the name Blackwing. You can see the movie's proposed version of Beak in the image on the right. The first version of the script by David Benioff featured Beak as a carnival sideshow attraction, who was killed by Sabretooth. But later versions of the screenplay changed Monaghan's character to Chris Bradley, a normal-looking mutant with the codename Bolt, who is able to manipulate electricity (and, by extension, any electrically-powered devices). As in the earlier drafts, he was murdered by Sabretooth. In the Wolverine movie, a stuffed bird (somewhat resembling Beak) in Bolt's circus caravan was a nod to the earlier script. The artwork is by Jerad S Merantz, whose website also shows his designs for Blob and for the surgically-altered Weapon XI version of Deadpool seen in the climactic fight scenes at the end of Wolverine. Merantz's sketches (see below, on left) show a far less human-looking Weapon XI than was in the movie.
